Theatrical Associates & Theatrologists of Athens Theater Meli in Athens City Greece

Expressing its love and passion for the theatrical arts, the Meli Theater actively supports all meaningful endeavors that aim at the promotion of the theatrical arts. On December 16, 17 and 18, 2005, the first Theatrology Convention of the Pan - Hellenic Scientific Theatrologists Association took place. Within the framework of the convention, the Meli Theater provided its theater hall for theatrical performances on the 16 th and the 17 th of Decemeber, as well as a party of the participants on the 18 th of December.

The Pan - Hellenic Scientific Theatrologists Association (P. S. T. A.) held the first Theatrology Convention, titled "The Greek Theater in the 20 th century: from concept theater to postmodernism" and celebrated its 10 years of existence (1995 - 2005).

The proceedings of the convention took place on 16, 17 and 18 December 2005, in the central building of the National & Kapodistrian University of Athens, in the "Ioannis Dracopoulos" Hall.

The convention’s objective was the promotion of theatrologists research and scientific work, as well as to develop a multisided approach to Greek theater in the 20 th century. The subject matter of the convention covered many and varied areas of modern Greek theatrical activities, such as contemporary playwriting, a modern approach to ancient drama, the national policy regarding theater, new theatrical trends and experimentation.

The convention was attended by graduates of Greek University Theatrology Departments and significant personalities from the theatrical field (actors, directors, playwrights, set designers, etc), as well as representatives of cultural groups (Greek Actors Guild, Greek Theater Playwrights Association, etc).

Included in the convention proceedings were performances by the students of the four Theatrology Departments that had contemporary Greek theater as their main theme. The performances took place on the first two days of the convention (16 and 17 December at 21.30) at the Meli Theater, provided by the management, specifically for these performances.

On Sunday, December 18, the convention came to a close with a party that was held at the Meli Theater.

The convention took place under the aegis of the National & Kapodistrian University of Athens, the Greek Ministry of Culture and the four Departments of Theatrology in Greece: Theatrical Studies Department Athens, Theatrical Studies Patras, Theatrical Studies Nafplion and Theatrical Arts Thessaloniki.

Even though Theatrology has been taught in Greek Universities for the past 15 years, this is the first time that graduates of the four departments have taken the inicative to organize such a convention, seizing the opportunity to present their scientific work to the public and to converse with recognized representatives of theatrical arts.
