“VAVYLONIA” written in 1836 takes us to the town of Nafplio in 1827, a rather important year for the rebellious Greeks. The announcement of the defeat of Ibrahim’s Armada from the United Fleets of the Great Forces marks the beginning of this play.
The attendants of the announcement are natives, characterised by various qualities, gathered from various areas. A native of Moreas (Peloponnese), one from Chios Island, one from Crete, a native from the Orient, a Scholar, a native Cypriot decide to have a feast at a local inn where they can eat, drink and celebrate for the event.
Each of the characters speaks his local dialect and as the differences among the various dialects are immense, a real babel is the result!
And as the feast is at its peak –thanks to the native of Chios Island who is incontrollable- a “linguistic” misunderstanding due to dialect differences leads to an argument between the Cretan and the Albanian.
All the characters participating at the scene of the feast, the drunkenness, the fight and the Cretan’s injury by the Albanian are so lively and real that create a panorama of comic events in this delirious folkloric comedy.
Dimitrios K. Byzantios was called due to this play “Theofilos of the Theater”.
This comedy is presented for the first time with a live band of traditional instruments. It is a sumptuous feast of music, colours and costumes consisting of 19 actors and musicians, considered as one of the most worthwhile shows. It has also received many great reviews, both from critics and spectators. |
