“Fiakas” is a social comedy based on particular characters and morals. It was written on the second half of the 19th century and is an exquisite sample of Constantinople theatre. It was first staged in Constantinople in 1870 and is one of the major comedies of Neohellenic theatre, presented even to our days.
Charilaos Ploutidis or Charalambos Petaloudis or Fiakas is a parasite of the Constantinople of 1870. Being dressy yet cunning, he pretends to be a rich descent of a noble family and flirts with the naive Evanthia aiming at her marriage portion. Evanthia being carried away by the novels of the time and imaginative as she is, becomes an easy victim. Giannis the servant, noble Frosso, and Mrs Kazamia contribute to the peak of this hilarious plot, when Fiakas, right before the revelation of his true situation, decides to pretend to be a German Baron staying “incognito” in Constantinople…
The author introduces us to the morals and fashions of the 1870 society of Constantinople in a very plausible way and brings forward rather satirically and sharply the notions of exaggeration and xenomania, as well as their consequences on society.
Situations and hyperboles of the 1870 remind us of respective cases in 2010.
