In the play “WHEN SHE DANCED” Martin Sherman approaches Isadora Duncan from a different angle. The whole play is about one day of her life in Paris. It is one day of her incredible relationship with the great Soviet poet Sergei Yesenin. Neither of them speaks each other’s language and on top of that they are prey to French, Italian, Rumanian, Greek people, a Russian translator and Isadora’s assistant –her voice of reason-, who invade in their life in one way or another.
Sherman has created a farce which easily jumps on to drama and back to comedy again. But what lies beneath is a tragedy; the conflict of the “ephemeral” dance with the “eternal” poetry, and the imminent personal tragedies.
The dead end Duncan has reached in Sherman’s play is the dead end all rebels reach when turning over dogmas and becoming a dogma themselves due to this overturning. In this babel, Duncam is trying to gain some space and time in order to set free more children, and so as to be able to see dance just like she dreams of it, as a power of energy, life and freedom.
In this play you won’t see Isadora dancing. She is yelling, laughing, crying, falling in love, lives with passion as Alexandros Eliopoulos (Alexandros Sorescu in the Greek play) and Miss Belzer point out.
In this play, Sherman doesn’t demystify Duncan. He is observing her living and being passionate about life. And more importantly, he connects this passion for life to the passion for dance, right on the stage.
The play was staged in London in 1991, with Vanessa Redgrave as Isadora Duncam, Oleg Menshicov as Sergei Yesenin, and Frances de la Tour as Miss Belzer. That show was honored with many awards.
It is worth noting that in parallel to the Greek show, during 2009-2010, the play is staged in Chicago, USA.
